Car shit

After two days of utter misery at work, I was amazed that I actually got to finish on time -- I had not been expecting to!

The unstoppable force of my executive dysfunction met the immovable object of a deadline to respond to the Government's call for evidence on Developing the automated vehicles regulatory framework.

Ugh. I am so disgusted by the whole concept of self-driving cars that it was...well, not the only reason it's difficult to write about, but it was definitely one of them.

In other car-related news, I'm always delighted to read that other people are noticing the same things I am: not only are car headlights too damn bright, but cars are too damn big.

...while bigger cars may be safer for their occupants, critics insist they are considerably less safe for other road users. "Whether you're in another car [or] a pedestrian, you're more likely to be seriously injured if there's a collision with one of these vehicles," argues Tim Dexter, vehicles policy manager at T&E. He is also concerned about the implications for cyclists.

Research carried out in 2023 by Belgium's Vias Institute, which aims to improve road safety, suggested that a 10cm (3.9in) increase in the height of a car bonnet could increase the risk of vulnerable road users being killed in a collision by 27%. T&E also highlights concerns that high bonnets can create blind spots.

This is also something I've read about in the U.S., thanks to Victoria Scott:

If, in the span of one year, 18 fully-loaded Boeing 747s crashed with no survivors, we’d reappraise airspace. We’d question how we build airplanes and how we train pilots. We would recognize this as a failure of the system, not as individual mistakes of 18 pilots. Our roads should be no different.

The good news is that we have sensible solutions in plain sight: lower speed limits, redesign intersections, build roads that prioritize pedestrians and cars equally, and most importantly, reward automakers for building smaller vehicles with better visibility. The bad news is these require some sacrifice from drivers. Safer roads have lower speed limits—likely enforced by ticketing in one form or another. These roads also require more concentration to drive on. SUVs and pickups would need to revert back to 90s sizing, and all of our cars would need to shrink. These are all a hard sell in America, admittedly, but until they happen, we keep losing lives needlessly.

I genuinely love cars, and I’ve owned some big trucks. I understand the appeal of high speeds and lifted rigs, and I’m loath to give them up. But even I can’t accept a future wherein 7,500 are killed each year, especially when the solutions are so tangible and the rewards so massive. I’d accept small sacrifices if thousands more could live decades longer. I hope the rest of America agrees.

After I got so tired yesterday I scheduled today to be Just Resting
but it is still not fun to be tiredness level feelings weeble wobble.

I listened to some more of Big Finish's Dalek Universe. Is okay. I think the ingredients, 10 getting drawn back before the Time War and meeting another Time Lord, are pretty good stuff, but I also think I Am Tired today so Is Okay.

I have been contemplating how to rearrange my bookshelves. There are shelves below bed level that simply never get read, and a lot of authors shelved in weird inaccessible places simply due to alphabetical order. I have forgotten who is down there really. The ideal solution is to move somewhere with enough horizontal space I can get at both sides of the room, or indeed to be a person who doesn't fall out of a single bed so the bed gets thinner, but since neither of those are doable, I contemplate which books to banish below read level.

I think it'll probably be mostly inherited ones. It's not that the classics of science fiction are bad, it's just that I don't think I've read them all even once, and the ones I have read I don't spend much time thinking about. Keeping Huff and Duane and McGuire and Bujold and Cherryh up where I can read them is key, I've reread all of those recently and I still buy their new work. Asimov may just have to deal with the floor height view. But then I feel like that's unfair and I should really reread things I'm sending Below? Just to be sure? But there are so many.

I also moved a bunch of things to make room for the work and that means noticing they exist again, and in some cases wondering why I still have those. But doing anything to not have items is More Work. So at the moment they're all stacked up in unusual places.

I wonder if anywhere still wants VHS tapes.

I'm sorry I'm not very interactive, just, got tired.

With any luck the work with the power tools and testing the fire alarms multiple times a day will be Over and I can sleeps whenever. That'll be nice.

voicetesting I guess?

So you say you have decided on me because I have a, what? 'More distinctive voice'?

Okay.

Because I think it is because you know I am not boring. We will have more fun, yes? But also maybe it is because Hollander is... what is this word, too similar. That makes things more difficult for you. I will be difficult in other ways. Maybe on purpose.

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

I listened to the Twins game against Puerto Rico this evening, which was happening while I was making dinner and at the gym.

I figured my Twinkies would get hammered; PR has lots of good players. But two of the best, Francisco Lindor and Carlos Correa, couldn't make the team for insurance reasons. Made me laugh that the lead-off hitter is another Minnesota Twin, Willi Castro. (Apparently he's not as good any more but I still have such a soft spot for him! There were other former Twins on this team too, Eddie Rosario is another that got mentioned fondly by the Twins radio guys, Kris and Dan.

The Twins actually won! 6-3. Good start by Zebby (phew), good game by Alan Roden (who I keep forgetting about; one of the many players they got in the fire sale last trade-deadline).

The protocol for entering the palace changes from time to time, so I can only offer a general outline. If your business is with the court or council, you should present yourself and your credentials to the guards at the southern gate of the outer wall of the palace. It is best to arrange beforehand for your visit. If this not possible, or if you cannot provide an exact time for your arrival, expect to wait as your credentials are sent into the palace to be checked.

Normally, you will be provided with an escort into the palace. If you arrive at a time before the palace begins its day, you will be expected to make your own way to the eastern gate of the inner wall. There your credentials will be inspected again, along with any document that the palace has sent out, permitting your entrance. You will then be allowed to enter the inner wall and make your approach to the palace itself.

The palace being located atop a high hill, you will find yourself faced with the steepest and longest set of stairs in the world. Pace yourself. You may wish to bring refreshments to partake of at the halfway mark.

At the top of the stairs, once you have recovered your breath, you should show your credentials and palace document to the guards at the gate, holding them up for inspection. The guards may not appear to look at you or even notice you. Do not be deceived. Those are real spears they are holding across the doorway.

If the guards grant you entrance, they will lift the spears. If they do not, you must retreat to the palace's inner wall and determine there what the problem is.

Assuming you manage to pass all these barriers, you will find yourself in the entryway to the palace. You will be guided at this point through the remaining stages of reception, which vary according to your rank and status. At some point, however, you will be let loose from Emor's protocol and permitted to take your own path. Let us start with a general introduction to the Chara's palace.

[Translator's note: This breathtakingly long procedure can be cut short if you possess the right credentials, as can be seen in Breached Boundaries.]

I am not surprised at all that someone is gonna try to primary Klobuchar. I'm only mildly surprised it's someone I know online because he's on the same fedi instance as me. I just know him as the Cookie Mom and now he's doing a new thing!

He's campaigning on abolishing the Department of Homeland Security, bringing our neighbors home, and not taking the support of the DFL base for granted.

  1. In one of the books I'm reading right now, they frequently make references to another researcher by the name of "Fruhstuck." On a hunch, I looked it up and saw that her name is actually "Frühstück," with umlauts over the u's, which is German for "breakfast." I suppose this is an occupational surname that you wind up with if your ancestors worked at Waffle Haus.
  2. In the past I've mentioned Cherry Bullet's "Hands Up", which uses "Für Elise" as part of the song. Today I discovered Twice Dahyun's "Chess," which uses the same song even more directly. Enjoy!
  3. The fact that I didn't get this posted during the Olympics shows how off-task I've been recently, but I've been doing better for the past couple of days, so you get the post now. This year's Games featured an odd intersection of two of my interests: The Olympics and intellectual property law. Several figure skaters had trouble getting clearance to use the music they wanted for their routines. Intellectual property law is a mess anyway, but once you're crossing pretty much every border on earth and involving major international organizations like the IOC and numerous of the world's largest broadcasters and on top of that there's a lot of money on the line, things just get even more bonkers.

Hope you're all doing well!
